Save Water!!! | ||||
Save Water!!! Every twenty seconds a child dies from a disease caused by dirty water. This means that in the time I have started talking to you, another child somewhere around the world has died, and five or six more will have died before I have finished! What dreadful statistics! We use water everywhere! We drink it, we use it for washing ourselves, for the dish washer, washing machine, and all water is purified and safe even for watering the plants in the garden! It is recommended that we drink six to eight glasses of water each day which is at least two litres. If a dripping tap is losing at a rate of 5500 litres a year it would keep seven people alive. When I was a pupil at Woods Primary School, the Water Bus visited our school. They taught us how important it is to save water and gave our staff a bag to put in the toilet cisterns. This reduces the amount of water that is flushed away, the same principle as putting a brick in the cistern. In conclusion, no matter how much water we save in Northern Ireland this will not help those in other countries. BUT it does make us realise how much we waste in everyday tasks and how important it is to raise money for wells and water purification systems as this is only practical way to help lessen the problem. This exercise has made me so much more aware of how easily we waste our water and take it for granted. I know that if I had to walk 40 minutes to collect water for my family, I would appreciate it so much more. James
