U16 Double Delight Defeats Dominican

On Wednesday 8th October the Under 16 football team travelled to Portstewart and eventually arrived at the Warren football pitch (SatNav on the blink!!!) for a 2pm kick off against Dominican College.

The pre match warm-up was ‘expertly’ led by Gareth McLean (one of the top 16 GCSE PE pupils in the whole of Year 12!) and hopes were high even though two seasoned campaigners were out injured (Liam Stewart and Nicky Leslie – we wish them a speedy recovery).

The first half started well with Glen Wilson controlling midfield and Rodney McKnight and Captain David Montgomery dealing with any would be Dominican attack.  Trevor Jordan was making, as usual, a nuisance of himself though thankfully it was on the pitch and not in the classroom and this reaped early benefits after an individual effort saw him beat a couple of defenders and slot it past a young but very talented keeper making the score Magherafelt one, Dominican nil.
Five minutes later a well crafted move down the right culminated in a second goal as a low cross from Stephen Cochrane was tapped in by Year 11 pupil Stuart Lennox.

The second half brought a couple of changes to the line up with Matthew Campbell and Gareth Johnson replacing the strong wing backs of Stuart Moore and Jake Gray but this caused little disruption as the replacements fitted in without any hassle. Although Magherafelt were in total control of the game at this stage they did fail to capitalise on the many chances that came their way. Jordan Yorke had to retire early due to an ankle injury otherwise the Under 16’s came out of their first game with a good result, lots of positives and can hold their heads high going into their next game – another away match versus Dalriada of Ballymoney.

Reasons to be cheerful

  1. Two goals
  2. Some excellent passing through midfield

Reasons to be fearful

  1. Only two goals (umpteen shots off target)
  2. Do not disrespect an official (players will be sent off and receive match suspensions)

Reasons to be earful

  1. Excellent match commentary from a local football fanatic
  2.  When everyone shouts “Matthew shoot!”, Matthew should really shoot!

Reasons to be tearful

  1. The coach will have some very hard decisions to make due to excellent performances and the availability of players

See you all on Monday at Meadowbank for training!   #
