U16 Draw Blanks at North Coast

Having two wins under their belt the under 16 platoon and myself had great expectations as we prepared to go North by Northwest to the wind-swept home pitch of North Coast Integrated College.

With the young guns from Year 11 unavailable the Year 12 boys would have to prove their metal and set out their claims for each of their positions for the approaching semi final.

Being guaranteed a place in the semi’s the mood on the journey to the match was somewhat over confident and a lack of focus on their last league fixture was evident.

Upon arrival at the pitch our team had their first glance at their opposition who were, on average, much smaller than us and again thoughts of a ‘goal fest’ were evident on the Magherafelt lads’ faces.

The pattern of play for the first few minutes of the game was to be replicated throughout both halves. Decent possession by Magherafelt in the NC half either resulted in a poor final pass, a snatch at a shot or lost possession due to over-exuberant play from an individual.

As the first half ended 0-0 and as groundhog day began again in the second half frustration was building in the MHS camp while confidence was growing in their opposition and this paved the way for a few chances to fall at the feet of the NC forwards and were it not for some excellent stops by Scott in the MHS goal frustration would have been replaced with misery.

The whole match really did see the good (some excellent, simply moves and individual skill), the bad (defensive blunders and lack of effort/poor attitude) and the ugly (overall frustration leading to rash passes and then angry outbursts among the team) of MHS’s Under 16 team’s performance.

It stayed 0-0 and upon the final whistle our perfect season had gone with the wind. The usual suspects on the team performed well but others must not wait for a superman to offer deliverance from the jaws of defeat i.e. as a whole the MHS Under 16’s need to take it to maximum overdrive in time for the semi final face/off.

Reasons to be cheerful

  1. Clean sheet (thanks to Scott)
  2. Nicky’s return from injury
  3. Two previous wins had given us an escape to victory had seen us through to the semi-final

Reasons to be fearful

  1. Poor attitude before and during match – over confidence is dangerous
  2. With Rodney out injured our central defence looked very shaky at times
  3. A lack of fitness among some team members

Reasons to be earful

  1. The only two things the coach should hear are calling for the ball and giving encouragement to team mates

Reasons to be tearful

  1. With all (including Year 11’s) and only those attending training available for selection for a squad of 13 there will be some boys missing out on a place in the semi finals.

See you all on Monday 23rd November at Meadowbank for training!
